Six Steps to Starting a GPS Tracking Business

Starting any new business is challenging and there are many factors to consider. But if you’re considering starting a GPS tracking business, you’re starting on a good track for success. A GPS tracking business has many factors that make it attractive for entrepreneurs, including the perk of recurring revenue from service subscriptions.

Before starting your GPS tracking business, there are several steps to take that will put your company on the road to success:

1. Pick a niche:

There are many kinds of vehicle tracking businesses. There are many kinds of fleets. There are many kinds of businesses that will benefit from the GPS tracking services you’ll be able to provide. An important question for you to ask yourself at this stage is, “Who will my customers be?” It is tempting to say, “Well, anyone that needs GPS tracking.” Resist that temptation. Not everyone needs GPS tracking, and going after everyone that does as a potential customer isn’t a good strategy. Your business will be far more successful dominating a niche market, rather than trying to be all things to all customers. Your marketing and sales pitch will be more focused, effective, and successful if you’re able to picture your ideal customer and focus your business around fulfilling their needs.

2. Pitch the right product:

Once you know your target clientele, you will need to develop your service offering. Will it be a subscription plan providing GPS tracking service? Will you provide installations for GPS tracking units? Will your company provide GPS monitoring and management of fleets? Again, the same principle as picking a niche will be true of picking your particular offering. Make an appealing product offering to your target customer. Don’t start by trying to offer every conceivable GPS tracking company product and service. Instead, make a focused and compelling offer to your ideal customer.

3. Choose the right software:

No matter what kind of GPS tracking service business you start, you will need to provide your customers with a way to view the movement and position of the assets they are tracking or that you are tracking for them. Rather than trying to develop it alone, choose GPS tracking software that will scale with your business. Finding a software partner like Position Logic, with powerful software and proven tools, will serve as the backbone of the service you offer your customers.

4. Choose the right hardware:

Pick solid GPS Tracking Devices to offer your customers. Installing high quality hardware for clients will benefit both your customers and your business. High quality devices require less service and maintenance and command higher margins.

5. Make the business:

Meaning, get the business license and hire a lawyer to take care of the paperwork. A tax attorney could be ideal for this step. You can handle most of the details of setting up the business yourself, but if this is to be a serious venture, you can save yourself many headaches down the road by hiring a lawyer to take care of the paperwork and other details that need to be perfect. Follow the rules. Follow the laws. Stay out of trouble.

6. Get your first customer:

Once you have your target audience, product offering, software, hardware, and business in place, it’s time to start getting customers. In reality, getting a customer or customers to express interest in your idea and offering could and probably should come before making the business official. This can be vital in establishing your niche and reputation in a growing business.

Once you have launched your business and gotten your first customer, it will require hustling and hard work to grow your customer base and business. But if you’re charging for the hardware, installation, and monthly fees for tracking, it will not take that many customers or tracked vehicles to make the business sustainable, profitable, and successful.

Curious to see how Position Logic can help you start and put your new GPS tracking business on the map? Request a free demo of Position Logic’s GPS tracking software to see how our team of GPS experts make sure that you’re in business for yourself, but never by yourself.

Industry-leading hosted and enterprise GPS tracking platform solutions provider Position Logic and world-class GPS tracking device manufacturer ATrack have teamed up to bring their latest product innovations to Exposec XVI International Security Fair, which takes place May 14 – 16 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

ATrack has recently announced the launch of its AX7 GPS tracking device, an OBDII Plug-and-Play device that is one of the first in the world to incorporate 3G, CDMA-2000, Bluetooth, and a variety of other networking technologies into one device, making it an ideal choice for fleet management, car rental, teen tracking, and other GPS-based businesses no matter where in the world they are operating.

To complement the AX7 and other GPS tracking devices, Position Logic’s GPS tracking platform can be provided as either a hosted or an enterprise solution to power GPS tracking businesses operating anywhere in the world. With a focus on customer service and satisfaction, Position Logic works constantly to add platform enhancements that will better their customer’s businesses – and their latest update, a wizard-driven, customizable graphical report creator, has already brought unequaled power and efficiency to end users, according to Position Logic CEO Felix Lluberes.

“We’re always looking for ways to help our customers grow their businesses,” said Lluberes, “which makes the combined efficiencies of Position Logic and ATrack a powerful combination. I invite anyone interested in GPS tracking to investigate for themselves the difference we can make to their business.”

Enhancement: Tracking Page Pop-Ups

Benefit to Users:
This Enhancement will provide the Users with additional information on both Tracking Page Pop-Ups. Prior to this Release, the information available to the Users was limited – on both pop-ups. By providing this enhancement, Users are now able to access a large amount of information, from the Tracking Page Pop-Ups.

Highlight:

Users will now be able to add and view additional information related to the Assigned Driver of a Vehicle. In addition to seeing these additional fields in the Map Pop-Up of the Tracking Page, Users will also now have access to the Drivers Tab in the Information Pop-Up of the Tracking Tab – an option that was not available prior to the Release. In addition, there have been additional fields added to both the Map and Information Pop-Up of the Tracking Tab. These Updates are listed below:

Enhancement: Creation of Users by Non-Admin Client

Benefit to Users:

This Enhancement to the Platform will enable Users, without Admin access, to create new Users, and assign Security Groups, within their Site. Prior to this Release, users without Admin access were unable to do this. By adding this Enhancement, Users will be able to create new Users without needing to rely on the Admin User of the Site. In addition, the Admin User will be able to dictate which Users have this functionality.

Highlight:

Users will now have the ability to create new Users, even if they do not have Admin Access. The Admin user will need to assign the new Security Resource, ‘SECURITYUSER_SAVE’ to the Users assigned Security Group, to enable this feature. Users will need this Resource in order to complete these functions. Once the User has this Resource, they will be able to create new Users. After the User has been created, they will be able to assign Resources – dictated by the Admin User – to the new User.
*For more detailed training on this New Enhancement, please contact your Account Manager.*

Update: Mobile Platform Viewer

Benefit to Users:

This Update to the Mobile Platform Viewer will provide the User with visible information in regards to the Group for each Vehicle Tracking and the Client for this Group. Prior to this Release, the information displayed in the Mobile Platform Viewer was very limited. This made it difficult for Users to easily identify the Group and Client being viewed within the Mobile Viewer. This Update will be available on all Mobile Viewer Platforms.

Highlight:

When Users access the Mobile Viewer Platform, they are first presented with the Dashboard. In addition to viewing the Item Names & there Last Report, Users will now be able to also view the Group in which the Item is assigned to. This will be visible directly under the name of the Item. Also, the Client Name will be listed on the bottom of the Mobile Viewer Platform. This Update greatly enhances the overall usage of the Mobile Viewer Platform for all Users.

Update: Cases Tab, Monitoring Center

Highlight:

This Update has modified the order of the Cases listed within the Cases Tab on the Monitoring Center. Prior to this Release, the Cases were listed in Ascending Order. After this Release, the default will list the Cases in Descending Order. This Update will enable the User to view the Cases in a more user friendly manner. The functionality of this has not changed at all – the only change is in the way the Cases are displayed.

Position Logic, a leading provider of hosted and enterprise GPS tracking platform solutions, and ATrack, a world-class manufacturer of GPS tracking devices, have teamed up to provide an unequaled presence at this year’s Exposec XVI International Security Fair, which takes place May 14 – 16 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

To be fair, the title is a little misleading: We have had an iOS tracking app frozen in the beta stage of development for a long time. So why frozen? The reasons are technical, and we’ll get to them in a little bit. But we can summarize it all in just one sentence.

Council of Hispanic Business Professionals Fashion Show Benefits Young Latinos

As we’ve talked about in the past, here at Position Logic one of the things on which we place a lot of value is giving back to our local community. We do it every year with the Naples Equestrian Challenge, and we’re pleased to announce that this year we’re also proud to be sponsoring the 5th Annual CHBP Mother’s Day Fashion Show.

The event is put on by the Council of Hispanic Business Professionals (CHBP), and all proceeds will be used to fund scholarships for Latino young adults to attend the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce’s Youth Leadership Collier program.

Sponsoring this event, then, lets us give back to the community not only by supporting the CHBP, but also through helping to provide opportunities for young Latinos to grow into being tomorrow’s community leaders. The Youth Leadership Collier program takes a limited number of students and in an intense, week-long program teaches them not only important leadership skills, but also gives them exposure to the local business community in ways they otherwise might not have been able to achieve.

And helping the young Latino students of today become stronger leaders who are engaged in the local community ultimately helps us, too — because with clients in over 50 countries around the world, many of whom are in Latin America and Caribbean, we’re always looking for the next generation of leaders who will keep Position Logic perpetually in the front of the pack. Growing those leaders, then, is important — and so is showing them that Southwest Florida is a great place to stay and build a career. So thank you, Youth Leadership Collier, and thank you, too, to the CHBP for helping some kids get into this program who otherwise might not have been able to.

If you’d like to show your support in a tangible way and you’re in Southwest Florida, please consider attending the show and supporting the kids. It’s on Saturday, April 27, at 11:00 a.m. at the Hilton Naples. Hope to see you there!

To be fair, the title of this post is a little misleading: We have had an iOS tracking app frozen in the beta stage of development for a long time.

Why frozen?

The reasons are technical, and we’ll get to them in a little bit. But if you don’t want to read through all the technical stuff, we can summarize it all just like this: At Position Logic, we will never compromise on the quality of our platform and we will never compromise on the quality of service that our platform provides. Simply put, the capabilities of iOS devices currently don’t allow us to provide a GPS tracking product for iOS that would meet our very high standards for quality — so even though we have the app developed, we will not be releasing it. Yes, that was a big decision on our part. But it was not nearly as big as the decisions we’ve made, from the very founding of Position Logic, to put quality first: And those decisions are always driven by our core business value of putting you, the client, first.

Getting Technical

Ready to get a little more technical? Let’s begin with the concept that iOS devices have a GPS radio built into their architecture that is distinct from the architecture that communicates with, for example, cell phone towers. The GPS architecture can be in either of two states: On or Off. Easy, right? The problems begin with the fact that while the GPS is turned on it consumes an enormous amount of battery power — so much so that an iOS device with GPS turned on will have its battery drained in no more than a few hours. That kind of battery drain is simply untenable, as you might imagine. For example, a lone worker whom you were hoping to track via his iPhone would be limited to very short stays on location, or else would need to be tethered to an external power service for the phone — very impractical!

At this point you might be wondering why we couldn’t “sleep” the GPS architecture, and just periodically wake it up so it could report its position and then go back to sleep, dramatically extending the device’s battery life. That is a great question — and in fact, it’s exactly what we’re able to do with Android and Blackberry devices and the tracking applications that we have for those devices. Here’s the real trouble with doing it for iOS devices, though: Apple never exposed that capability for programmatic access on its devices. Meaning we can’t turn the GPS feature on and off on iOS devices. Meaning we can’t track with the precision that we offer our clients. Meaning that until Apple decides to expose that functionality to programmers, we won’t compromised the integrity and quality of the Position Logic platform by offering an app which, by its very nature, would in itself be a compromise on quality — and when Apple does enable this feature, we’ll be right there and ready to roll.

What to Do

So there you have it. We have over three hundred GPS devices currently already integrated into the platform, so feel free to contact your account manager and explore solutions to whatever needs you might have as you grow your own Position Logic-powered business. If you’re not currently a Position Logic client but would like to see for yourself how we can bring our uncompromising quality standards to bear on starting your own GPS tracking business, request a demo of the GPS tracking platform.
