Tooling Around the Platform
The Position Logic GPS tracking platform is an incredibly powerful tool that allows you to provide your customers with a wide variety of options that will exactly suit their tracking needs and afford you a great deal of platform customization right out of the box. Where are these options configured? In Tools and Settings, of course – and aside from Security Tools, which is so important it merits its own group – just about anything you might need to configure is found in Client Tools.
Client Tools is easily found, but in case you can’t quite remember where it is log in to the platform dashboard and have a look at the lower right corner, where you will see three tabs. Click on the tab that’s labeled Tools/Settings, and then click on the link that says Tools and Settings. Hey Presto! The Tools and Settings page that you should now see has groups for Import Tools, Landmark Tools, the previously-mentioned Security Tools, and right at the top, the subject of our current discussion: Client Tools.
Clicking on Manage General Settings, which is the first link you will see under Client Tools, opens a window with five tabs allowing you to set a wide variety of parameters. The Preferences tab contains such important items as the language in which the platform will display, giving you the choice of English, Spanish, French, German or Portuguese – when we say that this platform is truly international, we mean it! On this very same Preference tab you can also choose whether the default entry page displayed when you sign in to the platform is the Dashboard or the Tracking page. Other configurables here include such items as how often messages are refreshed, how many items are displayed by default (Last Session, Last 24 Hours, or All Items), whether multiple logins to the platform are allowed, and more.
The next tab over from Preferences is titled (captioned?) Captions, and is straightforward: It allows you to configure the captions for assets, geofences, groups, landmarks, vehicles and many others.
The next two tabs, Map Images and Map Options, go right to the heart of what the client-facing side of the platform is all about: Displaying the things that are being tracked. In Map Images you’ll find drop-down lists of icons from which you can select what will display on your tracking tab to signify what state a particular asset is in. For example, you can choose icons that will visually indicate when an asset is in motion, when it’s stopped, when it’s generated an alert, and so on.
In Map Options you will find a ton of useful settings for how the map itself is displayed. You can toggle the display of various labels on and off, like geofence and landmark labels, and you can also control what shows on the label for a tracked device; for example, it’s completely under your control whether a label shows alerts, speed, temperature, fuel level, etc. You can also choose whether your map opens in Map, Satellite or Hybrid view, whether the “big view” mini-map is also displayed, and also configure many other map options – so be sure to check out this tab. Perhaps most importantly, this tab also contains a field allowing you to control how often the map refreshes. The default is set to three hundred seconds, which is 5 minutes and works well for many people – but the point is you can set this value to exactly meet the needs of you and your clients.
The final tab under General Settings contains display options. These options are particularly useful – and some might even say mandatory – given the international nature of Position Logic’s platform and clientele. Does 3/2/20102 mean February 3rd to you, or March 2nd? Do your country use a 24-hour clock, and are you metric or Imperial? Those options (and more) are the kinds of settings that you can change on the Display Format tab, allowing the presentation of information to users in a format that they can natively understand without having to bust out a calculator or do mental gymnastics on.
You’re Still Not Out of Options
There are many other features and facets of the platform that are easily configurable, and in the future we’ll be looking at some of those things.
